mæ has been working in collaboration with Karakusavic Carson Architects to develop a masterplan for the regeneration of the Colville Estate in Hackney. The project for the London Borough of Hackney has received planning permission and was shortlisted for a Housing Design Award 2011.
The existing 1950s estate of 438 dwellings will be redeveloped with 850 new homes comprising a mix of town houses and apartments of different tenures. The aim is to establish Colville neighbourhood as a new, successful residential district with high quality public realm and amenity.
The scheme will include a new public square, home zones, and communal play spaces. New commercial accommodation will be provided along the main street. Building heights range from terrace houses of 3 storeys to apartment blocks of 4, 5 and 6 storeys plus a tower of 18 storeys. The intention is to remove the stigma associated with the areas as an ‘estate’ and re-integrate the site into the urban grain of the surrounding area.
The project has involved close community consultation and has received the full support of residents and Borough officers and Councillors. Project facts |
