mæ, in collaboration with SliderStudio and WSP, received a Commendation in this open international ideas competition for the development of Nordhavnen, the north part of Copenhagen harbour. It is estimated that once fully developed the total floor area built would be in the region of 3 to 4,000,000 sq.m, will have 40,000 inhabitants and provide 40,000 jobs.
Our concept for this project was to create ‘a gateway green island to Copenhagen’. Our first thoughts were for a low-forested island in the sea. A landscape able to grow loads of food, generate energy, stimulate and sustain employment where market gardening, cultivation, allotments and parks precede development. As Nordhavnen grows a place develops that is environmentally responsible and socially diverse: ‘a place to start and a place to stay’. Nordhavnen is designed with environments, infrastructure and local services that make it attractive and much, easier to choose to live more sustainable lives.
Our focus is on creating an enabling infrastructure where topography, ecology and building meet on equal terms. Activity fields are cultivated before development giving our delivery strategy a time context. The tree planting anticipates the future urban structure. Future areas for research and commerce are initially programmed as market gardens, areas for residential are initially allotments, future tourism and leisure initially wetlands. The structure, based on a grid allows uncertainty in planning long-term.
