mæ has designed a range of house types for Phase One of Newlands Common in Waterlooville, Hampshire. The site is masterplanned by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and will comprise 1500 new homes, a business district, new school, cemetery, village centre and public spaces.
We have designed house types that optimise usable floorspace and minimise circulation space. A flexible plan was adopted whereby a number of different house types could be developed around a basic core. Rooms grow out or up to accommodate additional bedspaces or extra features such as en-suite bathrooms or utility rooms. The houses have been designed to contribute to a positive urban realm. Habitable rooms overlook the street for surveillance, car parking is set back in carports to reduce the car's presence on the street and amenity space is provided in gardens, balconies, roof terraces and verandahs.
