whitefields

Our shortlisted scheme, in collaboration with Proctor and Matthews Architects, for the regeneration of the Whitefields area of Nelson aims to tackle a widespread problem faced by 19th century industrial towns in the Government’s Housing Market Renewal areas. Such areas suffer from market collapse due to the limited housing types available and the poor quality of amenity and public space provision.

We have sought to create a new series of linked public spaces that run through the heart of Whitefields. A community centre with cafe, meeting rooms, enterprise hub and live/work units sits facing onto the main square.

We have converted the now empty 19th century terrace housing into more appropriate forms of housing that meet today’s needs. These include:
- converting single houses into more open studio accommodation
- creating 2into1 lateral conversions with flexible accommodation for 3-4 bedrooms
- creating 2into1 longitunal conversions which results in a new courtyard housing typology for the area

In addition we propose new courtyard style family houses which are aimed at attracting new investment into the area.
