Forming part of the new extension to Wolverhampton Art Gallery, the Pop Art Gallery has been designed around a family of furniture designed to accommodate regularly changing exhibits. A white leather padded bench for lounging forms the central item surrounded by mobile leather poofs, tables for interactive computer equipment and display cases and plinths. The furniture is constructed from black concrete with white over-padded leather seating intended to lend a slightly camp luxury to events.

The gallery space will become a permanent home for the Art Gallery’s acclaimed Pop Art Collection, which is the largest of its kind outside London. Started by David Rogers in the 1960s and 1970s, the collection includes over 100 works by artists such as Warhol, Hockney, Blake and Paolozzi. Every six months a complete re-hang of the works will explore changing themes originally suggested by visitors in the pilot exhibition Pop Test. These include Popular Culture, Politics, Consumerism and Pop Art’s influence on contemporary art.
